Ubi solitudinem faciunt, pacem appellant
From the famous speach of Calgacus before the battle of Mons
Graupius :
“….. Auferre, trucidare,
rapere, falsis nominibus imperium, atque, ubi solitudinem faciunt, pacem appellant”.
“….. To robbery, slaughter,
plunder, they give the lying name of empire ; and they make a
solitude and call it peace”.
( Tacitus
, The life of Agricola, 30,7)
The Calgacus sentiment can be contrasted to “peace
given to the world” which was frequently inscribed on Roman medals!
The ratio of Force and Right : on this subject I
recall two pieces I read at school :
The Wolf
and the Lamb by Phaedrus
and
The Melian Dialogue in the The History of Peloponnesian War by Thucydides .
